Intermediate B1

Listen to at least one episode of 6-minute English every week. Try to listen to it twice, once without the transcript and once with it. Write some short notes about the episode to help you to remember it. Click here for the latest episodes.

Improve your grammar by using the explanations on the British Council website.

Upper intermediate and advanced B2/C1

Listen to a TED talk or a podcast each week. If you find an interesting one that your colleagues might enjoy, let me know.

If you want some ideas about podcasts, click here. If you prefer videos, here are some for you to try. Click here.

Consider buying a grammar and vocabulary book to help take your English to the next level. I like the Destination series of books. Alternatively, try some of the grammar exercises on the British Council website.

Learning Tips

  1. Try to practice your English regularly - this will help you to remember things.

  2. Find a study buddy - someone who will do the homework at the same time as you.

  3. Listen to a podcast before you fall asleep.

  4. Stay motivated - the more you practice, the easier it gets.

  5. Tell your teacher what you want to learn.

  6. Don't worry if you forget what you have learned, that's normal. If you repeat it, you will start to remember it.

Useful resources

These include:

  • A good English language dictionary app such as the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary

  • Skell a corpus language tool - so you can find out how words are used in real life. Check words such as during, while and whereas in Skell

  • A good translation tool such as Deepl

  • BBC Learning English - follow on Facebook, Instagram or use the website

  • British Council - useful for grammar explanations

  • Youglish - to help with pronunciation

  • Google images - pictures can be really helpful. Search for nuts and bolts and look at the image results. This can be a great way of learning new words.
