Glarus to Linthal on a bike

If I had to recommend a bike ride for occasional cyclists, it would be route number 4 from Glarus to Linthal and back. Firstly it is relatively flat, secondly it’s away from main roads and thirdly, the scenery is awesome.

I’ve done this bike ride probably five or six times. Originally we’d start at Linthal and cycle as far as Lachen, passing through the city of Glarus but then we realised that it was more fun to start at Glarus, cycle uphill to Linthal and then turn around and go back the same way. Ok, I realise this isn’t a loop, so some purists may object but trust me, it’s worth doing the same route in the two different directions.

Here are some tips to help

  • Take the train to Glarus

  • Get to the platform early so that you can grab a space on the train for your bike

  • Remember to buy a bike pass for the day (15chf)

  • Get off at Glarus and follow the cycling signs for Linthal

  • Grab a drink or snack at the Mugg Circus ‘Beizli’ near Linthal

  • Enjoy the scenery

  • Take a short detour to take a closer look at the Diesbach Falls

  • Take some photos

If you want the really simple option, start at Linthal, as it is mostly downhill from there.

Should you want a ridiculously difficult option, keep going at Linthal all the way up the Klausen Pass and on to Altdorf…. I’m sure there are lots of fit cyclists out there who are good at cycling over Swiss passes but I’m afraid I’m not one of them.

Language Tips

Did you notice the use of the imperative in my tips. The imperative is short and clear so is useful for giving instructions. It can, however, sound a bit rude so use it with caution!
