May book club

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

It was a full house for this week's book club where we talked about Charlotte Wood's The Weekend which turned out to be a popular choice with almost everyone.

For our choice in May, we've opted for Cold Spring Harbor by Revolutionary Road author, Richard Yates. Set in New York in 1942, it will be quite a contrast to some of our recent choices. Read this review in the New York Times to find out a bit more about this book and consider whether you agree with the reviewer's critique.

At the book club we'll talk about final sentences. Pay attention to the way each of the chapters ends. Is the final sentence necessary or could the chapter have finished on a previous sentence and remained as effective? What is the author trying to achieve with the final sentence?

We'll meet on Monday 10th May at the usual time of 7.30pm to discuss the book. I assume that we'll do the lesson again by Zoom and hopefully we'll be back to the in-person lessons later in the year.
